What is DG - purpose and principles of work

Why is DG needed? Maps and charts are not without reason the main means for expressing quantitative patterns - unlike tables with numbers, they give us image phenomena and allow literally at a glance to assess the overall picture, note the differences and feel the patterns. It is this feature of human perception that explains the widespread use of graphic packages and cartographic systems for illustrative and analytical purposes. Data Graph (DG) is an extremely simple, compact and fast program that allows you to turn a series of numerical data for any spatial divisions into a capacious cartographic image.

DG is a GIS? Usually, to create cartographic illustrations based on number series, GIS is used - Geographic Information Systems ( ArcView, MapInfo etc.).
However, these are very complex, voluminous and expensive programs, since they are designed to solve special geographical tasks, and not to create illustrations for a wide range of users. Module Microsoft Map, embedded in excel, also does not solve this problem, since it is a kind of one of the well-known GIS, inherits the basic principles of its implementation and is focused on using only ready digital maps (if you need a map of your region, it is understood that you will buy it or order digitization from a company). At the same time, for illustrative and even analytical purposes, a full-fledged digital map and not needed - if you are interested image, general patterns of the phenomenon or just a picture in the report, then the exact geographical coordinates on which the map is built are unlikely to be of interest. It is this niche in the series of cartographic programs that is occupied by DG is not GIS, it creates not geographic maps, but cartograms(according to the classification adopted by geographers) and does not use the concept of geographical coordinates in their construction. Therefore, everywhere below the more familiar word "map" will mean "cartogram". DG is not a GIS, but a mapping tool. There are no well-known programs of this class on the market today.

Who needs DG? The program will be appreciated by those who are engaged in analytical cartography is a very convenient and flexible tool for visualizing data, modeling situations, building synthetic indicators. The program will certainly come in handy for those who have a need to simply prepare a cartographic illustrationto coursework, diploma, report, etc.. And, finally, exceptional simplicity, compactness and unpretentiousness make DG unsurpassed a tool for learning the basics of computer cartographyin schools, colleges and universities. It is possible that the program will also be useful to professional geographers for solving certain applied problems (social, economic, etc.).

What can DG do? DataGraf is not just a program, but a completely self-sufficient cartographic system, which includes everything you need to create full-fledged databases and maps literally " from scratch - turnkey". The system allows:
create your own vector(arbitrarily scalable) maps - area and point, using any suitable picture as a template
create for each card an unlimited number of thematic databases associated with it with numerical information
enter and edit numerical data manually, from the clipboard, external file
copy, delete, rearrange data, exchange between databases, as well as automatically recalculate indicators between two databases of different structure
export data to other applications via clipboard and files
represent any series of numerical data in the form of a map
the map can be arbitrarily scaled without loss of quality
any map can have an arbitrary color scheme, for which there is a built-in palette editor
legend and map parameters can be arbitrarily changed, for which there is a built-in style editor
a title and an arbitrary number of other labels can be displayed on the map - in any font and size, with a transparent or solid background
by clicking on the map, you can get information at a given point, display the name of the region on the map, as well as the value of the current indicator in any fonts
it is possible to work with two or more maps of the same territory, but with different principles of division
the resulting image can be written to disk in any format supported by your operating system
the image of the whole map or its fragment can be written to the clipboard for transfer to other programs
in addition to areal objects (region), you can also work with point objects (settlement)
point objects can be represented by geometric shapes or any of your icons (with transparent and opaque backgrounds), the ways of their graphical representation can be changed
point objects have their own independent legend, the parameters of which can also be changed arbitrarily.
for maps of the same territory, simultaneous work with area and point objects is possible (both cartographic overlay and recalculation of indicator values)
unique feature system is a built-in formula calculator that allows you to perform operations with data series using the formula you specify and record the result as a new indicator
The calculator has its own map window, in which you immediately see the result of the calculation in the form of a map, which allows you to quickly and conveniently check various ratios and simulate situations.

All this "stuffing" is located in two files, the total volume of which about 350 KB (!)(note - Kilo- byte!). In other words, on one usual floppy disk(if anyone remembers what it is) free to sign up four copies fully functional system (compare with any other mapping software). As far as the author knows, in terms of functionality/size ratio, DG is the most compact mapping system in the world! I will gladly remove this statement if someone writes an even more compact ...

How did it happen? Actually DG was not invented one fine day, but had behind him 20 year history. Beginning with 1990 years, gradually, brick by brick, ideas, algorithms were invented and honed, and eventually DataGraf for DOS appeared, which was quite popular at one time. This program is just an implementation of the same ideas under Windows, moreover, in the minimum required set. The design by modern standards is certainly a bit old, but if you need not “checkers”, but “go”, then you can try it.

Is free? Yes, since autumn 2016 in honor of 20 year old anniversary Practical Science full version of the program absolutely free. Moreover, if just maps of Russia or Moscow are enough for your tasks, then you don’t even need to create maps, they are included in the system kit - just download and use:

If you wish to express feedback, wishes, or comments on the work DG you can use Forum section "Original programs"
Good luck!

How to create a mind map

It seems that the task is clear as day, but where to start and how to finish without returning to the beginning is not clear. So, in such situations, intelligence cards come to the rescue. They will help you visually, plan the entire workflow and greatly simplify the work.

Intelligence - cards are, from themselves, blocks of various shapes, the content of which is the key information that describes important step or action when working with a project. They help us come up with new ideas, remember important points, plan your work, make decisions and control the entire workflow.

The advantage of mind maps on a computer, over paper versions, is the ability to change it and add various graphics. In addition, information in electronic form is more pleasant to perceive.

Programs for creating mind maps

There are many programs that allow you to create mind maps.

10 Free Map Creation Tools

There are paid ones and there are free ones. But, the meaning in them is the same, to structure information. The difference is only in the interface. Therefore, I propose to consider only two programs:

1.Microsoft powerpoint

2XMind Manager

Power Point is a program of a slightly different plan, but you can also make mind maps in it. I chose it for one, simple reason, that most teachers are familiar with it and not everyone is able to study a new program for different tasks.

XMind Manager is a free program, but it can be easily compared with paid counterparts. It is this program that I use when developing my mind maps and I advise you to take it into service.

Create mind maps

powerPoint 2010

Intelligence - a map, as a rule, consists of blocks. In Power Point, it can be created in two ways. With autoshapes and smart objects.

The first method requires more painstaking work, so it is inconvenient. The second method has many ready-made templates, so it is best to use it.

Quick Guide

1. Open the Power Point program

2. Go to the menu Insert -smart art

3. A window will appear with a choice of mind map template. Choose the option you like. We press OK. After that, test blocks will appear.

Now these blocks can be changed.

To add a new block, right-click on any of the blocks. Then select Add Shape. There will be 4 options for adding shapes:

· Add shape after - the shape will be added to the right of the block (which was right-clicked)

· Add shape in front - the shape will be added to the left of the block

· Add figure above - the figure will be added one level above the block

· Add figure below - the figure will be added one level below the block

To change the block shape, also right-click on the shape and select Change Shape. Choose any other shape.

How to add text, I think you will figure it out.

It is worth noting that in this program it is very inconvenient to create mind maps, and the purpose of this program is different. And if you want to create a large intelligence - a map, with numerous objects, then it is better to use the XMind program.

Undoubtedly, this program is one of the best. Plus, it's free to use. You can download the program on this page of the official XMind website.

Everything here is intuitive, clear and simple. There are no smart moves.

When you run the program, you will have one main block, the Central Section. Based on this block, you can create other blocks, for this you need to press the key Enter.

To create blocks one level below, use the key Tab.

Also, for each block, you can insert a note (text), to do this, click F4.

In the lower right corner there is a property panel for selected blocks, in which you can modify any element.

All blocks can be easily dragged as we please. And for each individual block, you can add different markers (pictures).

In principle, all this could not be written here, since when you open XMind, you would easily master the program interface on your own.

That's all, if you have any questions, write in the comments and I will definitely answer them.

When you have to explain something complicated, people often take up a piece of paper and a pen, start drawing, drawing. In this way, you can give the interlocutor a visual representation of the problem, which often becomes the key to understanding it. No wonder they say - "it is better to see once than hear a hundred times."

What is a mind map

Any concept, event or process can be divided into components, united by logical and associative links. Sounds confusing? This is true. But consider, for example, such concepts as "website", "design", "content" and "code".

The concept of "site" is broader and includes the rest. This means that “website” can be singled out as a central concept, from which connections go to “design”, “content” and “software”. So, perhaps, a mind map (or mind map) of an online project could begin.

Why is it needed

Such a schematic notation helps when people are thinking about complex problems, looking for ideas and solutions. Just memorizing all the nuances of a project requires significant mental resources that could be more appropriately deployed. The advantage of such a map is that if thoughts are written down or sketched on paper, there is no need to keep them in your head, you can immediately see the full picture, at the same time without losing details. The scheme of an information-intensive project can end up being quite branched, but it becomes clear which parts of the plan need to be improved, and what actions should be taken to achieve this.

Features of MindMeister

Drawing (let alone editing) high-quality circuits by hand is not always convenient and takes a lot of time, so it is not surprising that hundreds of thousands of people prefer to do it with the help of special software.

The advantage of the MindMeister service is its multifunctional, user-friendly interface and the ability to store data securely online. The entire history of map changes is stored on MindMeister servers and is backed up on several "clouds". So you don't have to worry about data being lost.

MindMeister also has a mobile app that allows you to edit mind maps and sync data from mobile devices. This means that you can always have your plans at hand. The service is quite convenient when working with touch devices.

In addition, MindMeister supports offline mode, so the user can edit their maps without having access to the Internet. When the Internet becomes available again, the new data is simply synchronized with the account.

To make your work easier, MindMeister offers users ready-made templates for specific cards, e.g. specifically for cards in the field of business, events, education, etc.

How much does it cost?

You can start using MindMeister with a free (“Basic”) package.

It allows you to create up to three mind maps at the same time.

Review of 17 shareware programs for creating mind maps

If you want to continue working with the service at a more serious level, you can switch to one of the paid options. At the moment, MindMeister has three main plans: Personal, Pro, and Business. All paid packages allow you to create an unlimited number of mind maps. The "Personal" package differs in that only one user can edit the map, while "Pro" and "Business" allow several administrators to do this at once. The business package, among other things, provides round-the-clock e-mail support for users.

Thus, the Personal package is best suited for solo workers, the Pro package is suitable for both personal and team projects, and the Business package is for teams of over ten people. The first 30 days these packages can be used for free, then, depending on the chosen tariff, the service will cost the user from $4.99 to $14.99 per month per user. It's also worth noting that MeindMeister has special discounts on packages for students and teachers.

XMind program

Creating Mind Maps in XMind

In the first part of our story about mind maps and programs for compiling them, we listed the main advantages of using specialized programs for compiling mind maps.

Now let's get down to practice - create a memory map in the XMind program.

The main purpose of creating this memory card will be to control the writing of the graduation project. Those who graduated from a university know that writing a graduation project is a voluminous and complex task that cannot be completed in 1-2 days. Therefore, as an example, we will create a mind map using the XMind program, where we will divide the process of writing a thesis into separate small parts.

As the famous saying goes: "A big elephant is eaten in pieces ...".

The program will only help us in controlling the process of writing a diploma, in structuring information on a diploma, keeping notes on specific chapters, etc.

TOP 10 programs for building a mind-map

The convenience is that all the information will be presented in the form of one memory card. Everything will be in one place. In the process, the map can be changed, added or removed as it seems important.

First you need to install the XMind program on your computer. There is both a paid version of this program (it's called XMind Pro) and a free one. Naturally, there are significant differences, but the free version of the program has enough functionality to master the process of compiling mind maps and put them into practice.

You can download XMind on the official website by following this link.

The download page has a free version of the program for Windows and Mac OS X. You can also download a version for Ubuntu and a portable version of the program, which is suitable for Windows, Mac OS and Linux.

Xmind is a pretty nimble program, it works equally fast on both powerful computers and laptops and netbooks. Slow operation and failures are not observed. This program differs from Mind programs Manager, which, although it has many functions, is noticeably slower.

Maps are compiled according to the type of nesting of topics - topics. Topic - " Topic "has its own name and is built higher in the hierarchy. Subsections, or in other words, subtopics - " subtopic "- are a continuation of the theme. There may be several. Each subsection is part of a general theme. Here, for example, is how the blank of the simplest mind map for a graduation project looks like.

As you can see, there is a central theme - "Diploma". Subsections are connected with the central theme - "Introduction", "Chapter 1", "Chapter 2" and so on ...

Similarly, for each subsection, you can create your own nested subsections that are related in meaning. Thus, a hierarchical structure can be created. It might look like this.

For the sake of convenience, we will henceforth call topic word topic(in the manner of the English word Topic), and subsection word subtopic(Subtopic).

After starting the XMind program, a workbook opens - " Workbook 1 ". If the workbook does not open when you start the program, then you need to click the button on the toolbar.

In the Xmind program, a memory map is created in the workbook - " Workbook ”, which in turn consists of worksheets -“ sheet ". In this way Xmind is similar to Microsoft Excel. The number and numbering of sheets in the workbook is indicated in the lower right corner. You can create many sheets in a workbook, but this feature is relevant for large projects. For a large project, you can create a main map and many nested small maps, each of which can be easily placed on a separate sheet.

If desired, a new worksheet can be added to the workbook. To do this, click " Insert and select " New Sheet ". You can also add a new sheet by pressing the combination ctrl+t.

After we have opened the workbook, a central topic appears in the center of the workspace - “ Central Topic ».

So, we change the name of the central topic to "Diploma" by double-clicking on the text "Central Topic". Here is what should happen in the end.

Now let's do the design of the central topic. To perform all sorts of frauds on the topic, such as changing its shape, color, thickness of the edging lines, etc., there is a tab " Properties ».

The Properties tab is located in the lower left corner of the program window. Also, if it is not there, then select the topic with a mouse click and press the key combination ALT+Enter. In this case, a drop-down menu should appear, where we select the “Properties” item.

To make any changes to a specific topic, you must first select it - click on it with the mouse pointer. Next, in the "Properties" tab, you can set its design. We'll talk about this.

Text settings.

To change the font, its size and color, as well as other parameters, go to the "Properties" tab and find the text settings - " Text ". Using the settings, you can change the font, size, color, position of the text, as well as make it bold, italic or strikethrough - there are a lot of possibilities. Management of settings is intuitive, looks like MS Word.

Form settings.

In addition, you can choose the form of the topic in the paragraph - " shape ". For example, we can change the shape of the topic to an ellipse, a square, or a square with rounded corners. There are other types of forms as well. It is also possible to select the background color of the topic fill. When you click on a small square, a window opens where you can select the desired background fill color.

Selecting the structure of the memory card.

Any mind map must have a certain structure - the order of interconnection of objects. This creates a clear hierarchy of objects on the map. It is better to decide on the type of map structure at the initial stage, since later, when the structure changes, the map can change outwardly a lot. In the Xmind program, the map structure can be selected on the "Properties" tab in the " structure ».

Here, in the drop-down menu, all kinds of mind map structures are listed. Choose the right one for a specific task. So, for example, for the simple card "Diploma" already shown here, which you have already seen, the structure was chosen Logic Chart (Left).

Setting up trunk lines.

In step " line » selects the shape of the guide lines that connect the topics. Here you can also change the thickness and color of the edging of the selected topic and its connecting line.

Choice of line thickness.

Choice of the color of the edging of the topic. The palette window opens when you click on the square (see the figure above).

Floating topic.

Since mind maps are designed to display information more conveniently, topics can be arranged without being tied to a specific structure. This is possible with the help of so-called floating topics ( floating topic ). The floating topic is not connected to the central topic (Central topic) and can occupy its own independent position on the map. Take a look at the picture, everything will become clear to you.

A floating topic can be created by right-clicking on an empty area of the workbook (Workbook) and selecting from the drop-down menu " floating topic " or " Floating central topic ” if the floating topic will be the central topic of a separate project or task.

A floating topic, together with other topics built according to a certain structure, allows you to make memory maps more flexible - the way the author himself wants to see them.

I would not like to leave aside the familiar tools that are present in almost any program.

Button " Create ". When you click on it, the program will create a new workbook - "Workbook".

Button " Open ". With this button, you can open a previously saved workbook on your hard drive.

The program saves the workbook to a file with the .xmind extension and the name that you specify when saving.

When editing a mind map, do not forget to click on this button after making changes to avoid data loss after possible failures. You can also set the autosave mode for changes at certain intervals. This is done in the program settings.

Buttons " Repeat " And " Cancel action ". If you want to undo the last action, you can use these buttons.

In addition, the toolbar has such ordinary tools as cut, copy, paste and delete. I think the purpose of these buttons is clear and does not require explanation.

Here's a fun mind map you can create in the XMind program.

There are various ways to capture the course of your thoughts or convey them to the audience. You can write, underline and highlight text in different colors, draw, draw tables, diagrams and graphs. The human brain is designed in such a way that it wants to perceive information visually. Psychologists have been thinking about this for a long time and developed the concept of a connection diagram, which can also be called a mind map, a mind map, etc. (English mind map). At the heart of such a diagram of connections lies the central idea, from which a certain number of branches depart, continuing to diverge further. The central idea can be a question, task, problem or area of knowledge, and the branches can be solutions.

The inventor of the technique is the psychologist Tony Buzan, although, of course, one cannot attribute the authorship of the idea to one person. He wrote a lot of books on the development of thinking and memory, contributing a lot to the popularization of mental maps. And in 2006, he led the development of mind mapping software called iMindMap. Thus, the method of visualization of thinking was transferred from paper to a computer, having received a lot of additional possibilities.

⇡ About the program

iMindMap is far from the only program in the list of mind map editors. And although it is inferior to Mindjet MindManager and ConceptDraw Office MindMap in terms of functionality and prevalence, it is an application with the “most human face”. iMindMap is cross-platform - there are versions for both Windows, Mac and Linux desktop systems, as well as for iPhone, iPad and Android mobile devices, as well as a "cloud" version. The program has a visually pleasing interface and supports the Russian language. You do not need to understand it for a long time - an unprepared user can immediately understand what this technique is. But most importantly, mind maps are more "live" and interesting than in similar editors, where they have a somewhat scientific look. However, take a look at the screenshot and decide for yourself which type of cards you like best.

On the left - a map made in iMindMap, on the right - in Mindjet MindManager

The program is available in three editions: Basic, Home&Student and Ultimate, which differ in the available functionality. The basic version is free, the educational version is $67, and the basic version is $256. There is also a version for mobile devices with access to the "cloud" for $13.99 per year. To get a free edition, you should register on the official ThinkBuzan website. Despite the large number of limitations, the main function - to create a map and export it as an image - you can use.

⇡ Creating a map in the program

iMindMap has a familiar office interface and Ribbon-style menu design. An open map is displayed in the main information window, on the right is a panel for inserting additional objects, which can be pinned. Switching between maps is carried out on the tab bar under the main window.

iMindMap Interface

Creation new card starts with choosing an image for the central idea. If the pictures present do not suit you, you can open your own. Then change the name of this object and start branching from it in different directions to any length. From the tips of those branches - new branches, and so on ad infinitum. Each branch is given a name that spreads along its length and can be aligned to one side, like text on a page. The shape of the branch can be changed by bending it in various ways at several key points. The location changes in the same way - just grab the branch by the tip and move it to any place, while other branches will automatically move. Branches at any level can be collapsed and expanded, perform various actions on them - delete, cut and paste, recolor, change the font of the name.

Adding new branches

The essence of this process is to find all options for solving the problem, ways to complete the task, etc. For example, you are going to launch a website - this will be the central idea. One branch "development" will depart from it, others - "filling", "optimization", "promotion". From the last branch, in turn, stand out "banner exchange", "contextual advertising", "promotion in in social networks". From "promotion in social networks" - Facebook, VKontakte, Twitter and so on. Thus, all points related to the implementation of this task will be thought out and clearly presented.

It is worth saying that additional central ideas can be added to the map. Branches extending from it will not intersect with the main tree. It is rather a visual convenience associated with the unlimitedness of the canvas. It is also possible to create child maps on any part of the branch - in this case, the selected branch will become the central idea, from which all subsequent branches will depart.

Each branch can be attached to various objects that complement its informational significance: icons, pictures, notes, audio recordings and links. The icons are divided into groups, each symbolizing something different - a trip, a document, a person, a calendar month. They are displayed near the tip of the branch, as are the images that are also attached to the branches. But notes, audio recordings and links are created and viewed / listened to / opened in the sidebar - only the denoting symbol will be visible on the branches. You can attach several different objects: for example, add a screenshot of the site along with a description and a link to it to a branch.

Adding a note to a thread

You can assign objects to branches, or you can add pictures, tables and flowcharts, which are created here using simple editors. These elements will be displayed under the branches as pictures. You can resize them, unpin them, and drag them to empty space or other branches. Floating text and pictures are also inserted in the empty space to indicate information not tied to the tree. All added objects can be moved to the background and foreground if they overlap.

Branches are added in several modes. You can draw standard branches by hand, giving them any shape - in this case, the number of geometric points can be unlimited. Branches are also inserted with a frame at the end, and the text is located inside it, and not along the length of the entire branch. You can add links between branches with arrows - this allows you to visually loop your tree and connect individual elements to each other. True, with a large number of arrows it becomes difficult to make out where they all lead. A cloud-shaped frame is superimposed on the branches, which also passes to child branches - but what's bad, it is not removed back.

Branch Framing

When you place branches on the screen, they can be pinned with a pushpin to keep their shape and position. If you don't want to manually lay out the layout, there's a "magic" Clean Up feature that will automatically lay out your tree, giving it the most concise look possible. By the way, compression can be performed on every collapse and deletion of branches, or on any map change at all, if you configure it accordingly in the "SmartLayout Options". The style of the tree also changes there - the degree of “roundness” of the branches is selected (you can make them completely straight) and their “spreading”, that is, the minimum distance from each other.

Map before and after "cleaning"

If you do not like the color scheme used and the structure of the branches of the map, you can choose other tones and style of the tree (curve type and line weight), as well as fonts and canvas background color. The card can be given both a strict corporate and a cheerful childish look, and if you like the result, then add the specified style to the standard ones. You can save the entire map as a template. When creating a new card, it is possible to use ready-made educational, personal and business templates.

iMindMap uses its own IMX format to save maps, and allows you to export to many formats: raster and vector images, documents, presentations, web pages, projects, audio recordings, tables, archives, and OPML markup. In the free and trial versions, saving is available only in JPEG and PNG format, but the resolution can be quite high.

⇡ Map display modes

Mind maps in iMindMap can be viewed in various display modes. If you want to show a map of the audience (primarily with a projector), then there are two modes for this: 3D and presentation. The 3D view is quite spectacular, and it also allows you to navigate through the branches interactively.

Displaying the map in 3D

The presentation mode will show you how to create a map step by step. A mouse click brings up the next slide.

Displaying the map as a presentation

In addition, it is possible to view the map in the form of a classic catalog, where instead of branches their names are displayed, which can be collapsed and expanded. But of particular interest to users involved in planning their time may be the display of the map in the form of a project, where there is a connection with the Gantt chart.

Displaying the map as a project

What you need to know here is that each added branch is by default a task that has a start and end date, as well as a status (completed or not completed). Initially, the day the task was created is set in both fields with the date, and you can change these parameters only for terminal branches that do not have a continuation. At the same time, changes in child branches automatically shift the date range and percentage of completion of the parent branch, which is the merging task; that, in turn, has its own, and so on up to the "global" task - the central idea. It is convenient to indicate the percentage of completion by attaching icons with project progress shares to the branches, as well as on the Gantt chart. This is a scale that clearly shows the length of time during which various tasks are performed (it has its own characteristics, but we will not go into them within the framework of this article). It is also very convenient to change the duration and execution time of tasks on it. Finally, branches that are not tasks can be disabled from being used in project management.

⇡ Synchronization with the "cloud"

As mentioned earlier, the program is cross-platform, and is also present in the "cloud". The web version is intended primarily for synchronizing maps between different devices, but it also allows you to edit them in a browser window. To use the service, you must have an account on the ThinkBuzan system. And although there is 1 GB of space on the server, synchronization of only five cards is available in the free mode, and it occurs only once every 24 hours. For money, these restrictions will be lifted. This service is paid separately from the purchase of the program, while you can download the version of iMindMap for your mobile device on the iOS/Android platform. The package is called iMindMap Freedom and the subscription is $13.99 per year.

Card management in ThinkBuzan Cloud

You can view and edit maps in the "cloud" in the same way as local maps. You can rename, delete, sort them into folders both through the application interface and in the web version. To add a card to the "cloud", you need to select "Save to ThinkBuzan Cloud" in the save mode and specify the appropriate folder. On the service website, this is done using the "Import" button. Export to various formats available only in paid mode.

Cloud editor ThinkBuzan Cloud

The "cloud" map editor is based on the Flash platform. Its functionality is greatly reduced compared to the desktop version, and only English is available from languages. The process of adding branches has remained the same, and their appearance has also been preserved. It is still possible to add frame branches and links. You can change colors, fonts, and text alignment. Icons, notes and links are attached to the branches, and you can place pictures and floating text on the canvas. Actually, everything is limited to this, but the main thing is that the cards do not lose their attractiveness online.

⇡ Conclusion

iMindMap was created under the guidance of the author of the idea of mind maps, and is sometimes referred to as the official software for this technique. The program was made for mass users inexperienced in complex conceptual applications. It is inferior in functionality to many other editors, but surpasses all analogues in terms of style, usability and cross-platform. iMindMap can be extremely useful tool for students, office workers and in general all people inclined to planning and data analysis. It can be used for a variety of purposes: organizing projects and various aspects of life, taking notes from books and lectures, structuring knowledge. Thanks to the presence of iMindMap on all major platforms and the synchronization of maps with the "cloud", they will always be with you, wherever you are and whatever device you are currently using.

A mind map is one interesting way to present an idea or problem in a more or less formal way that another person can easily understand. Moreover, this idea of presenting tasks does not have any special restrictions, except for the movement from a general task to smaller ones. Therefore, when browsing each of the products in this class, you may find that the functionality can vary greatly. For example, in one of the previous articles we already talked about the XMind program for compiling a mental map, which allows you to combine related tasks from different branches additional elements in the form of a cloud, which can significantly help in the implementation of those ideas and tasks where there are no clear boundaries. In the same article, we will talk about other free programs FreeMind and Edraw.

FreeMind mind map software

If you like classic mind mapping programs that automatically generate mind maps from your text, then you should definitely take a look at FreeMind. This multi-platform program with Russian language support will leave you with a good impression. Here is an example of a simple map:

Edraw Mind Map software for mind maps

Unlike FreeMind, Edraw Mind Map is not a classic mind mapping program, in some ways it even more resembles graphics editor or a flowchart program, as the vast array of all kinds of icons, lines, buttons, and other elements is amazing. Here is one of the built-in examples available:

At your disposal will be a huge set of all kinds of pictures and design elements, which you can also supplement with your own images. Also, Edraw has a fairly large set of tools that allows you to solve a lot of tasks. So, for example, you can even watermark each of your projects before exporting them to images (jpg, etc.), pdf, doc, html, svg, and visio. The interface of this program is clearly taken from Microsoft Office, although it is supplemented with its own controls. Apparently, this was done so that users who are accustomed to the Microsoft office can easily and quickly get used to the program. In a way, Edraw is designed for those who love colorful and colorful interfaces.

Like FreeMind, Edraw is about 38MB in size. But, unlike it, Edraw only supports Windows. Checking on VirusTotal also showed that the application is free from malware. You can download Edraw Mind Map and find additional documentation on the developer's website at this address https://www.edrawsoft.com/freemind.php (note that edraw has a number of other products, so carefully look at which link you download the distribution; for example , the paid version of edrawmax has a trial period of 30 days).

    Getting Acquainted

    Mind maps are a schematic representation of the key ideas of a book, the main points of a speaker's speech, or your most important action plan. With their help, it is convenient to restore order in the information chaos. Mind maps have many names - mental map, mind mapping, mind map, mind map, mind map.

    The word mind is translated as mind. Psychologists are sure: by drawing cards with felt-tip pens on sheets, you will really become smarter and unlock the potential of your brain. Let's leave these thoughts to scientists and talk about the practical implementation of mind mapping.

    What, where and how to draw?

    The map vaguely resembles a tree. Or a spider. Or an octopus. In general, something that has a center and branches.

    In the center is the main idea or problem. Key points depart from it. Each item is also, if necessary, split into several smaller items. And so on, until the whole problem is clearly worked out.

    How good is the map format?

    1. Schematic text is perceived better than a sheet, because it is shorter and simpler.
    2. Saves time to process information.
    3. In the process of compiling a map, memorization of the material improves.
    4. When working on projects with the help of coloring branches, areas of responsibility are clearly shown.

    How to create cards

    Let's not be smart and complicate - we will use the algorithm of the author of the maps, Tony Buzan.

    • Observe the hierarchy of thoughts;
    • In the center is the most important question. Graphic images (drawings, pictograms) are welcome;
    • Give images, blocks, rays volume. So the map is easier to perceive;
    • Leave a distance between the blocks, do not fence the palisade of the rays;
    • If you need to emphasize the connection between elements, use lines, arrows, the same colors;
    • Express your thoughts briefly and clearly. Simple font, one keyword above the corresponding line, the main lines are smooth and bolder, words are placed horizontally.

    Mind map - like a Glavred service, only for the brain. Helps to clean the garbage from thoughts.

    Mind maps are useful...

    ...in work:

    • Plan work projects. In many programs, it is possible to share access with all team members. Changes are made to the map, tasks are prioritized, the execution process is controlled;
    • Prepare and hold meetings. With the help of maps, you will draw up a speech outline, highlight key points, and establish the logic of the story. The programs have the ability to create a presentation - this will help you visualize the materials for the planning meeting;
    • Make a strategy. Maps are perfect in my opinion. They help to go from the general to the particular;
    • Do some brainstorming. Some programs even have a special mode.

    ...in training:

    • Write down the key ideas of the seminar, lectures. Such a summary will help to remember the train of thought of the teacher;
    • Organize information. You always have free space to add an important thought.

    ...in everyday life:

    • Plan. I use maps to create plans for the week, month, prepare for important events;
    • Make lists. It can be a list of books, movies, webinars, shopping, gifts, or just a list of things to do someday;
    • Write summaries of books you read. One main branch - one chapter. Brief thoughts, abstracts, main points fit perfectly into the card format. In addition, some programs have the ability to take hidden notes. Hover your mouse over a specific block and a window will open with a detailed description of what is written in the block.

    Evaluate

    I chose 15 programs (+3 from the editors) for creating mind maps. The selection includes popular drawing services and little-known ones. They differ in design, export capabilities, ease of management. Some programs are more suitable for personal use, while others help to effectively plan work and study. The description applies only to free versions. Read the review and choose the program that is convenient for you.

    For your convenience, I have also prepared a comparison table of the capabilities of all the programs presented in the table.

    My impressions

    The program is worthy of attention if you have small requests. MindMeister even in the free version has a fairly wide functionality: different styles and colors of blocks, changing the color of the text and its style. A small menu appears on the right and with the toggle buttons you change the design mode. Convenient, compact, simple. Maps are easy to draw: select the block from which the next rays should go, and click on the plus sign. If you want to color the blocks and add icons, emoticons, it will work too.

    The MindMup program is ideal for beginners because there is no chain of complex actions. You can insert a picture or edit an inscription with two clicks, create new blocks or delete them with one click. At the same time, the map looks aesthetically pleasing, it is understandable and logical. It can be personalized by adding photos. At the time of adding, you can easily change the size of the image, place it under the text or on the side.

    Mind42

    Features of Mind42:

    • Possibility of joint work on the map;
    • Sets the block task execution priority. Viewing the priority is easy if you hover over the special icon.

    My impressions

    It seems that the creators of the program have already decided a lot for me. For example, they set their own order in which the branches will be located, offered only one type of font and blocks. But on the other hand, you can set the priority and progress of tasks. In general, the capabilities of Mind42 are modest, like young girls in ancient Russia.

    XMind

    Features of XMind:

    My impressions

    Using XMind is definitely worth it. I thought about the paid version, but for now I have enough of the stripped-down free version. The program has a lot of possibilities. Choosing it for simple planning or taking notes is like driving a Ferrari through the countryside. The program is more suitable for professional teamwork. I like XMind for its design and ease of drawing.

    MindJet Mindmanager

    Ming Manager Features:

    • The templates are categorized - meetings and events, management, strategic planning, personal productivity, troubleshooting, flow charts;

    My impressions

    Mindmanager offers a lot of educational materials, technical support service works. The design of the card can be both concise and playful if you so desire. Management is simple, all the necessary buttons are at hand. If you study this program thoroughly, then it is quite possible to use it for home and work. Data is inserted into the map from Excel, Outlook, you can attach other maps. Personally, I do not need so many functions yet.

    Personal Brain

    Personal Brain Features:

    • Complex program management;
    • Shows a 3D view of the mind map.

    1. Basic paid package ($219). Available printing, adding files, links, pictures, notes;
    2. Pro packages ($299). Provides integration of the calendar and events, spell checking, saving reports, multi-page printing, map export. The difference between the Pro License, Pro Combo, TeamBrain packages is the desktop version and cloud storage.

    My impressions

    Didn't like it. First, I went through the quest to install the application, put checkmarks and dots in the required fields. Then she opened the map and was disappointed in the management. If you click in the wrong place, the central block changes and you are disorganized. Well, the design is dark. In general, I did not make friends with her.

    My impressions

    One of the best programs I have used. I would put XMind and MindMup next to it. Very easy to manage. Easily switch between fixation, brainstorming, mind maps and time maps, draw blocks and relationships between them. If you want to recreate the atmosphere of drawing with markers on whatman paper, then in iMind Map you can draw branches by hand.

    My impressions

    Nice program, but I don't like this map structure. I love when the main idea is in the center. The design didn't work for me either. Why is she nice then? Its simplicity, unobtrusive design. I liked how the gray color marks on the map stand out, for example, “competitor analysis”. They do not distract attention, but they are useful.

    Pleasant design, clear control, great features - a good program, in general. If I manage the company, I will take MindGenius into account.

    Mapul

    Mapul features:

    • Unusual design. Bright juicy colors of lines and blocks;
    • Maps are saved in JPEG, SVG formats;
    • Small selection of colors and fonts;

    2. Premium package. The number of cards is unlimited. Premium can be purchased for 3, 6 or 12 months. Accordingly, $25, $35, $49.

    My impressions

    The design just captivated me: bright, juicy, unusual. But the drawing process let us down. I want to align the line - instead, the program draws me an additional branch. In general, if you get used to it, then Mapul can become your favorite.

    My impressions

    After working in Mindomo, there is some pleasant aftertaste. Drawing is easy - just click on the button next to the block. Pictures are inserted easily and immediately in the optimal size. I liked that you can make notes for each block in the form of plain text or lists - very convenient.

    1. Awesome. $5 per month or $50 per year. Unlimited maps, presentation mode, shared folders, high resolution image uploads, wide range of color schemes;
    2. Organization (corporate). $8 per month. Added a separate workspace, consolidated billing, user and deadline management, corporate identity.

    My impressions

    Didn't like the design at all. It is not very difficult to understand the management, tips are nearby. Lines and blocks are easy to create, change direction. The slider with the cancellation of changes in the map is just a salvation.

    My impressions

    Lots of useful features in the program. As an addition to the mind-mapping service, there is also a line of programs for creating business graphics and project management. In general, this is a huge set of tools for business.

    LOOPY

    LOOP features:

    The service allows you to create "live" schemes in which elements move between blocks. This allows us to illustrate some cyclical processes.

    Tariffs:

    The service is free, registration is not required.

    My impressions

    Very little card design. The main thing is that the cards are “live”, with their help it is convenient to depict dynamic processes. The resulting scheme can be inserted into the site as an interactive element.

    Draw.io

    Draw.io features

    • Registration is not required. When you first log in, choose where to save the files. If in the cloud, then you need authorization through the appropriate service.
    • Files are not saved in Draw.io, but in your storage - on Google Drive, OneDrive, or your computer's hard drive.
    • Multifunctional tool. In addition to mind maps, you can make flowcharts, simple infographics, visualize business processes, and even design page layouts.
    • There are online and desktop versions, as well as integrations with many tools, including Jira and Trello.

    Tariffs

    The tool is free without any restrictions. Except when you need to deploy a product on your server.

    My impressions

    For a quick sketch of thoughts and plans, the functions and features are too much. Because of this, the service is more complicated than those designed specifically for mind maps. It may take longer to create. But this is a great option when you need to make a diagram for a presentation and other similar tasks - complete freedom of action will allow you to draw it exactly the way you need it and design it in the corporate style and colors.

    WiseMapping

    The tool is free without any restrictions. If you install the program on your server, and some functions are missing, you can contact the developers.

    My impressions

    The first impression is confirmed - the tool is very simple and without bells and whistles. Of the possibilities - adding emoji, links and notes. You can also change the style of the blocks, the color of the background and borders, the style and color of the text. In my opinion, the tool is well suited for personal use and quick sketches.
